Is CBD effective against endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic gynaecological disease that affects about 1 in 10 women, or nearly 200 million women worldwide. This disease is characterised by very intense pain, particularly during periods. To relieve this pain, doctors usually recommend conventional medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs, painkillers or opiates.

However, these drug treatments cause significant side effects and lose their effectiveness over time. Women must then find new alternatives to live with this disease, which is very disabling and yet very common.

Since medical and scientific studies revealed the enormous potential of cannabinoids to relieve chronic pain, many women have turned to CBD (cannabidiol) to cope with endometriosis, reduce their suffering and eliminate the side effects of drug treatments.

CBD has already been used for several years for medical purposes in the United States and is gradually becoming more widespread in Europe. In fact, CBD helps to relieve the symptoms of numerous diseases such as epilepsy, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, etc.

So why not endometriosis? If you are one of the millions of women who suffer from endometriosis and you still haven't found a suitable solution to this problem, find out all about CBD and endometriosis in this article.

The positive effects of CBD on painful periods

When a woman has endometriosis, periods are very painful because the bleeding releases inflammatory mediators throughout the lower abdomen. The pain can even occur outside of menstruation and makes a woman's life very complicated and sometimes even disabling.

So, how do you relieve endometriosis pain when drugs no longer work and cause far too many side effects?

CBD may be the solution that will revolutionise the lives of many millions of women. Indeed, CBD is capable of relieving gynaecological pain thanks to its powerful natural anti-inflammatory properties and almost immediate analgesic effect.

By turning to therapeutic cannabis, many women have seen a marked improvement in their quality of life from the very first uses. The positive effects are rapid and effective because the cannabinoids and terpenes naturally present in the cannabis plant are rich in medicinal properties.

So, it is important to note that hemp does not in any way cure endometriosis, but it does eliminate many symptoms naturally and without any health risks. Here are the main positive effects of CBD for endometriosis:

  • Relieves chronic pain
  • Reduces the intensity of pain spikes
  • Stimulates appetite
  • Calms nausea
  • Improves mood
  • Balances the endocannabinoid system

Receptors involved in the process against endometriosis

Several studies point to a disbalance in the endocannabinoid system as a possible cause of this gynaecological disease. Indeed, the endocannabinoid system is intimately linked to the female reproductive system, since many cannabinoid receptors are found in the endometrium, the lining of the uterus.

It therefore seems logical that the proper functioning of the female reproductive system is directly impacted by the balance of the endocannabinoid system. When an imbalance occurs in these neurotransmitters, complications and diseases can arise, most notably endometriosis.

Taking cannabinoids such as CBD would then be ideal for regaining balance. If CBD acts on cannabinoid receptors in the female genital tract, then it may be a good idea to take CBD.

According to a scientific study conducted by Canadian doctor John Thiel on 134 patients, taking CBD to relieve chronic pelvic pain yields at least 60% positive results.

In addition, CBD would even prevent the proliferation of endometriotic tissue by blocking the activation of the GPR18 receptor.

So far, this study has only been tested on mice, but the results are still very promising. If this study proves successful in the future, women would probably no longer need to go through surgery to remove their endometriotic lesions.

Today, this surgery still carries a very high risk of recurrence. So if CBD could stop the production of unhealthy cells, would this be the end of endometriosis?

What form and variety of CBD for endometriosis?

Depending on the form of CBD you choose, the effects will be more or less rapid and intense. For example, you can apply a CBD massage oil to the lower abdomen to relieve chronic pain. If it's a very severe pain spike, a few drops of CBD oil sublingual should give you very quick relief.

There are also CBD-based cosmetic products that you can easily incorporate into your routine (moisturiser, shampoo, body lotion...). You can also cook with CBD flowers by making a juice or an herbal tea. The important thing is to choose a format that suits your needs.

As far as varieties go, you can simply make this choice based on your personal taste and CBD content. If you're new to CBD, go for a low dosage between 5-10%, then increase as you go along if the need arises.

For example, you can start with a Nina Simone CBD flower 9.3%. If the effects are too weak for you, you could try a CBD flower such as Moonrock 35% or even crystals concentrated to 99% CBD. The good thing is that you really are spoilt for choice when it comes to aromas and flavours.

Fruity, woody, floral, sweet smell? You're bound to find a medical cannabis strain that suits your fancy among the hundreds of varieties available.

What dosage of CBD for painful periods?

First, note that there is no risk of overdosing because CBD is a natural product, unlike traditional drugs. Every woman is different and therefore may experience different effects with a similar dosage.

Listen to your body and always start with a small dose and gradually increase, not the other way around. In case of an intense pain attack, take 10 drops of CBD oil dosed between 2000 and 2500 mg sublingually and wait 10 to 15 minutes. If the effects are not felt or wear off quickly, you can take a few drops again.

Highly concentrated in CBD, the oil has an almost instantaneous analgesic effect that will help you overcome pain spikes. On a daily basis, you can also make your herbal teas and juices with CBD flowers.

This way, you can consume it regularly throughout the day and reduce the chronic pain that keeps you from living normally.

Can CBD cure endometriosis?

At present, cannabidiol does not cure any disease. It is important to understand that it only reduces the pain caused by endometriosis but does not prevent the disease from developing. Nevertheless, scientists and doctors are looking into the matter and trying to show that the proliferation of endometriosis tissue could be slowed down by CBD.

Can CBD cause side effects?

Every user is different and may react differently to CBD. Although minimal, side effects can include: migraines, nausea, alertness and drowsiness. If this is the case, just be aware of these reactions and adjust dosages accordingly.
